Where Young Artists
Take the Lead
For more than 50 years, Spartanburg Youth Theatre (SYT) has been the place where imagination takes center stage. Founded in 1972 by visionary educator Mary Nicholson, SYT began with a simple but powerful idea: young people shouldn’t just watch theatre — they should create it.
Today, that spirit lives on in everything we do. As one of the Southeast’s leading youth theatres, we’re dedicated to enriching the lives of youth and families through high-quality “for youth, by youth” productions, innovative educational programs, and community outreach that inspires the child in all of us.
At SYT, every role — on stage and behind the scenes — is filled by talented young actors grades 3-12 and crew members grades 7-12. From acting and singing to running lights, sound, and stage crew, our students gain hands-on experience guided by professional theatre mentors. Along the way, they discover teamwork, confidence, and the courage to shine, both on stage and in life.
SYT nurtures young artists through high-quality productions, classes, and camps — inspiring creativity, confidence, collaboration, and a lifelong love of the arts.
SYT is the educational and youth performance program of Spartanburg Little Theatre (SLT), offering age-appropriate productions and training for young actors in our community. SYT and SLT work hand-in-hand to create a vibrant, multi-generational theatre community in Spartanburg.

We produce family-friendly shows performed for kids, by kids, where the stories are as vibrant and imaginative as the performers themselves. Each production gives our young artists the chance to grow, collaborate, and share the magic of live theatre.

Whether they’re stepping on stage for the first time or preparing for advanced performance, every child finds a place to belong and thrive at SYT.

For generations, the Spartanburg Youth Theatre has touched thousands of young lives, many of whom have gone on to diverse careers, all carrying with them the teamwork, creativity, and confidence they discovered under our lights.
Spartanburg Youth Theatre was honored as a 2023 South Carolina Theatre of Distinction, a recognition that highlights excellence in artistic quality, educational impact, and community engagement.
